Why Animals Have Always Had My Heart

I think I have to thank both my parents for my love of animals. Although neither of them was terribly fond of animals, they realised my love for animals and put their views aside and allowed me to explore my love for animals. So much so that when I was 3 years old, they took me to an animal shelter in St. Maarten and got me a retired police dog as my first pet (the dog in the photo is not Berto). I still remember how Berto protected me from all sorts of garden lizards, and poisonous insects. Berto even protected me when robbers entered our home and sadly, he passed due to the incident. As a child I could not understand that Berto protected me to the point that it costed him his life. But, as an adult I realise that I have him to thank for being here and thus, Berto will always have my heart as he sparked my love for animals even further.

Throughout my lifetime, I have tried my best to do good for animals. I used to sneak dogs and cats home who were on a euthanise list and care for them in the best way that I could, to one point in time my father called our house a mini zoo and my mother had to forbid me from bringing any pets home. So, although I could not bring them home, I tried my best to get others to adopt them or care for them. The trouble I got in doing that...well that is a story for another day, but what I can tell you there were around 100 dogs and cats combined, so that was a lot of sneaking animals into my friend's houses when their parents were not home and begging their parents to adopt them or find people to adopt them when they got caught. So was it the best solution, no, but did these animals get off the euthanise list, yes. And I am glad I did what I did, even if it got me into trouble 100 times. Moving on...

Until today, helping animals is something I love to do. I cannot see an animal that is starving or in a situation where they do not feel comfortable. When I see homeless animals or animals who have been treated badly by humans, there is this unsettling feeling of sadness and anger that goes right down to my bones. I do not know if other people feel this way, but it is a feeling that just cannot be described. Thus, I will always do anything I can do to help an animal in need. To me it does not matter how much I have in the bank, any contribution whether it be big or small, does make a difference. And I always choose to be that difference regardless of what anyone says. Doing right by animals makes me happy and in some way I hope it makes them feel happy too.

So all I ask of those reading this post. Whether you are an animal lover or not, they are living beings and we share this planet whether you like it or not. Thus, where ever and whenever you can, just be kind to them. It does not have to be financially, but even something as small as letting a stray who is not disturbing anyone sit in a spot so that it can rest for a bit, is going above and beyond for that stray. It is the little things that animals remember for life and the more we do for them, there is this feeling of relief and satisfaction that comes from going beyond ourselves when doing good for others. Trust me it is a feeling that you can never get and each experience and encounter will come with a different feeling. So give it a try and see how that ripple expands in more ways than one.

Till my next post, stay safe, take care, much love and respect. CHEERS!
